    Calling the action

    Wednesday, September 26, 2007, 10:13 PM [General]

It won't be long before another season of the PBA Tour is televised on ESPN.Dave Ryan and Randy Pederson will call all the tenpin drama and excitement. My feelings about this team are mixed...Ryan still needs to work on his style,Pederson is improving with each passing year.Over the years, this sport has been blessed to have tremendous individuals doing play-by-play and color commentating.I always felt the two best to call a bowling match were Chris Schenkel and Fred Wolf.Schenkel did the Pro Bowlers Tour on ABC for 36 years,Wolf was the voice on the Championship Bowling series. As far as the commentary position was concerned,Billy Welu,Bo Burton and Earl Anthony stood out in my book.Welu's approach was relaxed,easy-going...Bo was more detail, more technical...and Earl was a bit of both.Others who were more than capable of handling these duties include Mike Durbin,Marshall Holman,Denny Schriner and Jay Randolph.Televised bowling has no doubt seen it's share of individuals that described, enlightened and entertained.

    September is here!

    Sunday, September 2, 2007, 11:19 PM [General]

Like it or not, another September is here. That means another new bowling season.Every bowler looks forward to this time of year.It is a time to put all that practising over the summer into good use...to improve our game,to make it fun again.Bowlers bring into a new season high hopes: to improve our average over last year,to utilize new equipment,to bowl in a new center,a new league,or to go back to an old favorite...to rekindle the magic. We forget what happened last season and focus on this new season...to have another fresh start. To all bowlers out there, have a great 2007/2008 season...Peace!

    USBC Masters

    Thursday, May 24, 2007, 09:49 PM [General]

The finals of the USBC Masters will be held at Miller Park in Milwaukee on the 27th of October.Miller Park staged this event back in 2004,Danny Wiseman emerged as the winner in this rather unique setting.A crowd of some 4,300 attended the nationally televised finals. When I watched this event back in 2004,I was hoping that a new PBA attendance record would be set.You would figure with Milwaukee being one of the major bowling hubs, that a rather large crowd, say somewhere around eight to ten thousand, would see this bowling event in a baseball stadium that seats probably more than forty thousand.Truthfully,I was a tad disappointed in the size of the turnout. The current attendance mark was set at Joe Louis Arena back in 1995,for the finals of the US Open in Detroit. There were over 7,200 in attendance that April afternoon,I should know,I was there.Let's hope this time around,Miller Park draws a much more bigger crowd than in 2004.It would seem like a waste if this year's turnout is the same or worse than the first time around.Milwaukee and the USBC,to a certain degree, deserve better.

    Monday, April 30, 2007, 12:46 AM [General]

The following is what I feel are the ten greatest bowlers of all time. Some may agree with part or all of the list, some may not agree with it,period. That's cool with me,everyone perhaps have their own "top ten" list.Anyhow, here's mine and they are not necessarily in order: DON CARTER,DICK WEBER,EARL ANTHONY,CARMEN SALVINO,WALTER RAY WILLIAMS,MARK ROTH,JOHNNY PETRAGLIA,JOE JOSEPH,JOE NORRIS and BILLY GOLEMBIEWSKI.
